Largest Domestic Cat Breeds

There are many large cats breeds some of which that have originated from different parts of the world as far back as centuries ago. Some of them that have now been classed as being domestic are hybrids that have been linked with wild cats.

The world’s largest domestic cat breed is the Maine Coon. Native to America they were discovered in Maine which is how they got their name, they are friendly and will weigh between 10-25 lb depending whether they are female or male. The biggest cat according to the Guinness World Records is a Savannah they have leopard print. Scarlett is the world’s tallest and achieved this in 2009 measuring 41.87 cm. Many do not class this breed as being domestic due to them being crossed with a Serval a wild African cat. They became popular in the 1990s.

The Burmese cat comes in a variety of colors and is said to originate from a female called Wong Mau who was brought from Burma in 1930 and bred with a Siamese in America. They are known for being very friendly, curious and will like to get involved with you.

The Egyptian Mau originated from a princess who got the cats from Egypt and began to breed from them in Italy in 1952. Their eye color can change according to the mood they are in and they will often have musical voices, unlike a normal cat. They are quite a rare breed but can be loyal and friendly.

The Chausie cat is also a hybrid like the Bengal and Savannah, bred from a jungle cat they became popular in the 1990s. They come in three colors, black, black grizzled and ticked tabby. They can be very active and are intelligent. They do not like to be left alone so would need a human or another cat to be around for company.

Bengals are another breed that is also known to be intelligent and like company. They were bred from the Asian leopard cat, have striped and spotted markings and are know to like water. The Siberian cat is an ancient breed that has been present in Russia for centuries. They are gaining in popularity but are rare outside of Europe due to the expense of importing them. They come in a variety of colors which include tabby, tortoiseshell and solid and are know for being friendly and affectionate.
